What is a Spherical LED Display?

A spherical LED display, also called an LED sphere, a sphere LED screen, an LED globe or an LED ball display, is a ball-shaped screen built from curved LED panels. Content wraps around the entire surface, so there is no front and no back, and no bad seat. In an atrium it reads from every floor at once. On a stand it reads from every aisle.

That is a genuinely different proposition from a flat screen. A flat screen faces one direction and asks people to stand in front of it. A sphere is an object in the room that people walk around, look up at, and photograph. It works as architecture as much as it works as a display.

Add sensing and it becomes interactive: visitors spin a globe of the Earth, push through layers of live data, or move through a brand story, using a touch kiosk beside the sphere, touchless gesture control, or their own phone.

Is this the same thing as the Las Vegas Sphere?

Same idea, different scale. The Las Vegas Sphere is a building with an LED surface, roughly 112 metres tall. A commercial spherical LED display is the same underlying technology, curved LED panels driven as one continuous 360° canvas at a size that fits an atrium, a stand, a gallery or a lobby, typically between 1 and 10 metres.

It is worth saying plainly because it is the most common thing people picture, and the honest comparison helps rather than hurts: you cannot have a Vegas Sphere, but a 3-metre sphere in a hotel atrium produces the same reaction at a scale you can actually commission, install and pay for.

What a Spherical LED Display Needs to Work

A sphere is the most structurally and creatively demanding display we supply. Nearly every problem on a sphere project is decided months before installation, at specification and content stage. This is what actually governs it.

Pixel pitch from viewing distance

Optimal viewing distance in metres ≈ pixel pitch in mm × 3 to 4. A P3 sphere reads cleanly from about 1 m, a P6 from about 2 m. Specifying finer pitch than the room needs is the most common way to overspend on a sphere.

Total resolution

Pixel count ≈ π × diameter² ÷ pitch². A 2 m sphere at P3 gives roughly 1.4 million pixels, which is below 1080p spread over the whole ball. A 4 m sphere at P2.5 reaches about 8 million, roughly 4K. Pitch drives this far more than diameter does.

Cost scaling

Cost follows surface area, not diameter. Going from 1 m to 2 m roughly quadruples the cost. Worth knowing before the brief settles on a number.

Get the pixel map first

Content is authored in equirectangular projection, but the deliverable is the sphere's own pixel map, bespoke to its panel layout. Request that mapping file before the first frame is produced. Asking early is free; asking late can cost a full re-render.

Respect the poles

Equirectangular projection compresses content towards the poles — an element at 60° latitude is squeezed about twice as hard as one at the equator, and the top and bottom rows collapse to a point. Keep key content within roughly ±45–60° of the equator. Never animate anything important across a pole.

Power

220–240V AC. Draw depends on diameter, pitch and brightness — a small indoor sphere runs on a normal circuit, a large or outdoor one needs a dedicated distribution. We confirm the load and give your contractor the figure.

Refresh rate

Specify 3,840 Hz or higher if the sphere will ever be filmed or photographed for broadcast or social. A lower refresh rate scans visibly on camera, which quietly ruins the content you commissioned it to generate.

How much does an LED sphere cost?

It depends on diameter, pixel pitch, indoor or outdoor build, structure and rigging, and how much custom content is involved. One thing worth knowing early: cost follows surface area, not diameter, so going from a 1-metre sphere to a 2-metre one roughly quadruples the price rather than doubling it. What content works best on a sphere?

Anything planetary, geographic or global, Earth data, climate, logistics networks, satellite imagery, because a sphere is the correct shape for it. Beyond that: bold form, strong colour, organic motion, particles and textured gradients. What does not work is dense small text, thin hard-edged lines and large flat fields of a single colour, which expose panel seams. A sphere is a big canvas with a modest pixel budget, and designing to that is what makes it look spectacular.
